UBC academic calendar winter term 1 2024

1. UBC 2024/23 Academic Year begins on Thursday, September 1 2024.
2. Student Housing: Winter Session Residences open for Term 1 at 9:00 am on Saturday, September 3 2024.
3. Labour Day holiday is Monday, September 5 2024 according to the UBC holidays calendar 2024. University is closed. Central study areas of the Irving K. Barber Learning will be open.
4. UBC Winter Term 1 2024 classes start on Tuesday, September 6 2024. It is the start of Winter Session Term 1 for most faculties.
5. The First-day orientation program for undergraduate students in most programs is Tuesday, September 6 2024.
6. According to UBC academic calendar 2024-2025, Wednesday, September 7 2024 is the last day for payment of the first instalment of fees for registration and course changes made before September 1. Students who have not paid their fees are placed on financial hold; further registration activity is not permitted, grades are not released, and graduation diplomas are withheld.
7. International exchange and visiting Student Orientation for students entering Winter Session Term 1 is on Thursday, September 8, 2024.
8. Friday, September 9 2024 is the last day for degree-granting and Congregation applications (Graduate Studies)to be submitted to Enrolment Services by all graduate students expecting to graduate in November. Application is made through the UBC Student Services Centre.
9. Saturday, September 10 2024 is the last day for graduation applications to be submitted to Enrolment Services by all undergraduate students expecting to graduate in November. Application is made through the UBC Student Services Centre.
10. The last day to submit online applications for Affiliation Scholarships, Affiliation Bursaries, Awards for Aboriginal Students, and Awards for students with disabilities is Thursday, September 15 2024.
11. Graduate Studies: The last day for withdrawal from the instalment-based tuition program for a 100% refund is Sunday, September 18 2024. Courses are dropped through the Student Service Centre.
12. Monday, September 19 2024 is the last day for change in registration and for withdrawal from most Winter Session Term 1 course without a withdrawal standing of W recorded on a student’s academic record.
13. The last day for eligible students to apply for an exemption from the U-Pass program is Monday, September 19 2024.
14. New International Students’ iMED opt-out deadline is Monday, September 19 2024, according to UBC academic calendar 2024-2025.
15. Monday, September 19 2024 is the last day for changes between credit and audit for most Winter Session Term 1 courses. Refer to the UBC online Course Schedule for specific information.
16. The last day to elect Credit/D/Fail grading for eligible courses is Monday, September 19 2024.
17. Wednesday, September 21 2024 is the date of the Meeting of the Senate.
18. Friday, September 23 2024 is the last day for the final doctoral oral examination for November graduation.
19. Monday, September 26 2024 is the last day for change in registration and for withdrawal from most Winter Session full-year courses (Terms 1 and 2) without withdrawal standing of W recorded on a student’s academic record.
20. National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is Friday, September 30 2024. The University of British Columbia is closed.
21. Monday, October 3 2024 is the last day for submission of applications for supplemental and deferred examinations from the 2024 Summer Session according to the UBC academic calendar 2024-2025.
22. Teacher Education Program: School-based Orientation Practicum – 1 day-a-week practicum begins (Secondary Option) on Tuesday, October 4 2024.
23. Teacher Education Program: School-based Orientation Practicum – 1 day-a-week practicum begins on Thursday, October 6 2024. Elementary and Middle Years option.
24. Friday, October 7 2024 is the last day for payment of fees for any fee assessments incurred between September 1 and September 30. Students who have not paid their fees are placed on financial hold; further registration activity is not permitted, grades are not released, and graduation diplomas are withheld.
25. UBC Thanksgiving Day is Monday, October 10 2024. University closed. Central study areas of the Irving K. Barber Learning will be open.
26. Friday, October 14 2024 is the last day for submission of exam copies of a doctoral dissertation to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies for transmission to the external examiner in time for the December 31 program end date.
27. The Meeting of the Senate is on Wednesday, October 19 2024, according to UBC academic calendar 2024.
28. Friday, October 21 2024 is the last day for final master’s theses and doctoral dissertations to be accepted by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies for degrees to be conferred at November Congregation. Must be approved and accepted by 4:00 pm.
29. Friday, October 21 2024 is the last day for students to complete all program requirements (including major papers) for non-thesis master’s degrees to be conferred at November Congregation is Friday, October 21 2024.
30. Teacher Education Program: Professional Development Day is Friday, October 21 2024 – Classes are Cancelled (all options).
31. Friday, October 28 2024 is the last day for withdrawal using the Student Service Centre from most Winter Session Term 1 courses with withdrawal standing of W recorded on a student’s academic record according to the UBC academic calendar 2024-2025.
32. The last day for completion of bachelor’s degree program requirements for graduation in November is Friday, 28 October 2024.
33. Tuesday, November 1 2024 is the last day for sponsored students to submit applications to have fees billed to a sponsoring organization for Winter Session Term 2 (January to April) tuition fees. Students who do not submit their applications by the deadline will be required to pay their second instalment of Winter tuition fees by January 11, 2025 to avoid financial hold procedures.
34. UBC Winter Session Term 1 midterm break 2024 begins on Wednesday, November 9 2024 to Friday, November 11 2024, for most faculties (November 9 to 11 inclusive). Lectures and laboratories are cancelled. Some branches of the Library and other facilities remain open.
35. Remembrance Day is Friday, November 11 2024 according to the UBC holiday calendar 2024. University closed. Service in War Memorial Gymnasium for all students, faculty, alumni, staff, and friends at 10:45 am. Central study areas of the Irving K. Barber Learning will be open.
36. Supplemental and deferred examinations (2024 Summer Session) take place on Saturday, November 12 2024.
37. Meeting of the Senate date is Wednesday, November 16 2024, according to UBC academic calendar 2024-2025.
38. International Master of Business Administration (IMBA): The first day of mandatory Orientation and Program Opening is Thursday, November 17, 2024 according to UBC academic calendar 2024-2025.
39. Fall Congregation 2024 is from Wednesday, November 23 2024 to Friday, 25 November 2024 at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts.
40. Friday, November 25 2024 is the last day for withdrawal using the Student Service Centre from most full-year courses (Terms 1 and 2) with withdrawal standing of W recorded on a student’s academic record.
41. The last day for supervisors to submit the Nominations for the External Examiner form to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies for May Graduation is Friday, November 25 2024.
42. Thursday, December 1 2024 is the application deadline for UBC (Centennial Scholars) Entrance Awards.
43. Thursday, December 1 2024 is the application deadline for Canadian direct entry high school students wishing to be considered for a First Round Offer of Admission.
44. Thursday, December 1 2024 is the application deadline for students wishing to apply for Affiliated Fellowships (Master’s level) and CIHR, NSERC, and SSHRC Canada Graduate Scholarships Master’s “CGS M”.
45. Students wishing to be considered for a Presidential Scholars Award must submit their online application for admission to UBC by December 1, 2024, according to UBC academic calendar 2024-2025. This includes paying the admission fee and submitting in-progress or final Grade 11 and Grade 12 marks as or if requested in the online application.
46. Monday, December 5 2024 is the last day of classes for LAW.
47. Wednesday, December 7 2024 is the last day of classes for most faculties.
48. LAW School Term 1 (December) Law examinations begin on Thursday, December 8 2024 (December 8 to 22 inclusive).
49. Friday, December 9 2024 is the last day for supervisors to submit the Appointment of External Examiner form to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies for the April 30 program end date.
50. Term 1 (December) examinations begin on Sunday, December 11 2024 to Thursday, December 22 2024 for most faculties, day and evening classes (December 11 to 22 inclusive). Saturdays and Sundays are included in the exam schedule.
51. Tuesday, December 13 2024 is the application deadline for the term-based Exchange, Global Seminar.
52. Wednesday, December 14 2024 is the last day for final doctoral oral examinations in time for December 31 program end date.
53. Meeting of the Senate date is Wednesday, December 14 2024, according to UBC academic calendar 2024-2025.
54. Winter Term 2 Only Bursary applications are available to students online through the Student Service Centre between December 15, 2024 and January 15, 2025, which closes at midnight. Students must have confirmed full-time enrolment for Term 2, must be receiving their Term 2 only student loans and must have assessed unmet financial needs to be considered for general bursaries.
55. Teacher Education Program: The last day of classes for Term 1 (all options) is Friday, December 16 2024.
56. Friday, December 23 2024 is the last day of Winter Session Residence Contract for Winter Session Term 1–only residents.
57. Totem Park, Place Vanier, and Orchard Commons Residences close at 12 noon on Friday, December 23 2024 for the holiday break and all residents are required to vacate at that time. Residences will reopen at noon on Sunday, 8 January 2025.
58. Saturday, December 31 2024 is the last day for Graduate Students employed as Teaching and Research Assistants to apply for deferral of Winter Session Term 2 (January to April) tuition fees.
