As a new student or applicant of Syracuse University, you’ll need to activate your account before logging into Syracuse my Slice.
How to activate your account
Before you can access university systems such as My Slice and Blackboard, you must activate your NetID. During activation, you create a password for your account and set up a self-recovery method. This self-recovery method can be used to reset the password if you ever forget it.
A NetID is a personal identifier assigned to SU students, staff and faculty to allow them access to many SU computing resources. It typically consists of a combination of initials and last names and may include a number.
All NetID owners are required to change their passwords at least once per year.
Several email messages will be sent to NetID owners starting 30 days before their password expiration date, notifying them that they must change their password to avoid expiration. If the password expires, the NetID is disabled. Once the account becomes disabled, all resources that require the NetID and password are no longer accessible.
If you have not activated your NetID, you will need to do so to access My Slice.
Visit netid.syr.edu, click “Activate Your NetID” and follow the instructions. You will need your SUID number to activate your NetID. Once you activate it, you will only need your NetID and associated password to access MySlice.
You will receive your SUID number once you apply for admission. Your SUID number can be found on the letter you received from SU Financial Aid (if you are an applicant) or on your SUID card.
After your application is uploaded to the system, you will receive an email confirmation with access to your SUID. You can always email us at orange@syr.edu (providing your full name and date of birth), and staff can retrieve it for you. Only students can request their SUID numbers.
SUMail
SUMail is managed by the University and utilizes Microsoft’s cloud services.
Your SUMail email address is your NetID@syr.edu. SUMail uses the same password that you set up for your NetID. For example, if your NetID is xyzsmith, your SUMail email address would be xzysmith@syr.edu.
Newly enrolled students are assigned an official email address approximately 24-48 hours after submitting their Admissions Acceptance Form (undergraduate) or the Intent to Register Form (graduate, Law), paid tuition deposit, and confirmed as enrolled and have activated their NetID.
First-time non-matriculated students (e.g. University College) are assigned an official email address, usually within a day after they have submitted their registration.
Syracuse University will use your syr.edu email address to communicate important information about the Blackboard, my slice and other account systems to you (e.g., server information such as downtimes, scheduled maintenance, etc.). It is, therefore, very important that you check this email regularly.
Syracuse blackboard
Blackboard is the supported Learning Management System at Syracuse University.
Once a student registers for a course that is using Blackboard, a student account is automatically set up, and the student is enrolled in the appropriate course(s). Users log in to Blackboard with the same NetID and password used to log in to My Slice.
Courses are only visible to students in Blackboard after they have been made available by the instructor. For students to see and access current and previous courses in Blackboard, instructors will need to make them available.
