Michigan State University uses the semester system. There are usually 3 semesters (Fall, Spring, and Summer) in an academic year. There are about 14-15 weeks in each semester at MSU.

Courses at Michigan State University are given on a “semester” basis, and credits earned are semester credits. To convert semester credits to the “quarter” systems, multiply by 3/2. To convert quarter credits to semester credits, multiply by 2/3.

If you have 12 or more credits, you are considered a full-time student at MSU. Freshmen require 0-27 credits, Sophomores require 28-55 credits, Juniors require 56-87, and Seniors require 88+ credits.

All undergraduate baccalaureate programs require a minimum of 120 credits. Most MSU programs are designed so that a student starting a program as a first-year student may finish it in 8 semesters by satisfactorily completing an average of 15 credits a semester.

In practice, students usually carry from 12 to 18 credits a semester depending on personal circumstances and the chosen program of study.

4. MSU Move-in date 2024 is from August 26, 2024 to August 28, 2024. Move-in times and details will be posted in the MSU Housing portal. As you prepare to make the move to Michigan State, be sure to check your MSU email account and your mailbox for how move-in will work.
5. Initial minimum tuition and fee payments are due for Fall 2024 on August 29, 2024.
6. Late enrollment fee ($100) for Fall 2024 begins (fee waived for newly admitted and readmitted students) from August 31, 2024 to December 11 2024.
7. MSU fall 2024 classes start on August 31, 2024. Students should follow their Monday class schedule on Wednesday, August 31, 2024. Thursday, September 1 and Friday, September 2, 2024 classes will meet as normally scheduled.
8. Labor day holiday (Michigan State University is closed) is on Monday, September 5 2024.
9. The online open add period for Fall ends on September 7, 2024 at 11:59 p.m according to MSU academic calendar 2024-2025.
10. The visitor Change Deadline is September 7, 2024. It is the last day to change to or from Visitor for Fall – must be done in the Registrar’s Office by 5 p.m.
11. Final certification forms for non-Degree Audit programs are delivered to colleges on September 8, 2024.
12. September 23, 2024 is the end of the tuition refund period for Fall semester courses – no refund after this date.
