What is UKZN Student Housing?
Staying in residence is an extension of your university education, and you can benefit from a range of facilities and services including PC labs, network connections, social and sporting activities.
Student Housing & Residence Life at UKZN strives to ensure that a living and learning environment is the foundation of its residence culture. Every effort is made to ensure that students’ residence life experience will foster their holistic development as well as being fully supportive of their academic programme.
UKZN Residence Application | How to Apply for UKZN Hostel – University of KwaZulu-Natal
Residence life is a special experience. Staying in a UKZN residence is an extension of students’ university education, where they can benefit from all the facilities and services such as student learning centres, social and sporting activities, life-skills and peer- programmes.
UKZN Student Residence
UKZN provides different types of accommodation for undergraduate and postgraduate students, on and off campus.
Usually, you will start out in a first-tier residence (full catering), move on to a second-tier residence (senior catering or self-catering) and later, stay in third-tier accommodation (semi-autonomous self-catering).
Each residence has its own history and traditions, but they all try to provide a great experience. Safety is of great importance to UKZN, so all residences have strict access control and most are covered by closed-circuit television cameras.
Students with disabilities can be accommodated in different residences. Simply contact the Student Accommodation Office and the Disability Service, and they will address your particular needs.
How To Apply For UKZN Student Housing?
Apply for student housing as part of your UKZN application for admission. Housing eligibility criteria for first-time entering undergraduates: first-tier student accommodation There are limited places in residence and these are awarded to applicants on the basis of criteria described below.

- There should be a powder blue numbers that indicate your current year e.g. 2019 or 2020.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING TO RESIDENCE?
In all residences at UKZN you will need to provide your own –
- bed linen (for single bed)
- blankets/duvet
- towels
- iron
- kettle and coffee mug
- study lamp (provide own two-pin-plug)
- Alarm clock (if you don’t want to be late for lectures!)
- cooking utensils
- crockery and cutlery
- FOOD!
- Padlock
- Washing basket
You may also bring the following, subject to certain restrictions:
- portable radio (beware of noise regulations)
- personal computer
WHAT MAY I NOT BRING?
- pets
- inflammable liquids
- electric hotplates or paraffin stoves
- heaters

WHAT WILL I FIND IN MY ROOM?
All rooms are equipped with the following:
- bed and mattress

- chair

- curtains or blinds
WHAT ABOUT PERSONAL SAFETY AT UKZN?
- Student cards are used to gain access to UKZN campuses and the residences.
- Security guards are posted all around the campuses and at residence entrances.
- There are several emergency intercom boxes around the Pietermaritzburg Campus.
- Security guards are available to chaperone students within the Campus.
- An extensive transport service links all off- campus residences with respective campuses between 07:00 and 23:00 on weekday.
Security is, however, dependent on students playing their part, so it is IMPORTANT that:
- When walking at night on or off campus, do not walk alone – walk with a friend.
- When you leave your room, please lock the door.
- Students are encouraged to insure and to take care of their own possessions.

Accomodation for Students
Residence accommodation is available on Edgewood campus. Both catering and self-catering options are available. A total of 631 students are housed in 11 residences on campus. Men and women are housed separately and 55% of the residents are female. Double as well as single rooms are available. Some residences offer self-catering facilities. All residences have access control doors. An additional five flats housing five students each are available for post-graduate students.
Howard College & Medical School
On-Campus Residences
The University residences for Howard College and Medical School in Durban accommodate approximately 2162 students. Competition for places is keen and it is not possible to accept all applicants. Residences are grouped into two halls, namely Charles Smith Hall and Albert Luthuli Hall. Charles Smith Hall is comprised of 12 individual residences close to the main academic buildings, banks, shops and Medical School. Albert Luthuli Hall is comprised of the Cluster Residence and the six-story Tower Residence. Situated on the western side of the Howard College campus, this complex is furthest from the academic buildings, but close to most sports fields and the Old Mutual Sports Centre. All residences have access control, lounges and television rooms, intercom systems, call boxes and parking space. All students are accommodated in single rooms. All residences are self-catering while a cafeteria facility is available for students. Limited accommodation for postgraduate students is offered at Scully House and Postgraduate House.
Off-Campus Residences
Mixed Gender Residence – St Hillier
St Hillier comprises fully furnished two/three bedroom flats. Each student has a single bedroom. Occupants share a lounge, kitchen and bathroom. A laundry facility and parking are available. St Hillier is situated opposite Queensmead Shopping Mall in Umbilo and is a few minutes walk from the Medical School campus. It is on a bus route to Howard College campus.
J V Smit Residence
This residence has 90 large single rooms with entertainment and study rooms as well as tennis courts. It is a catering residence. Laundry and parking facilities are available. J V Smit is close to the Medical School campus and is situated on a bus route to Howard College campus and the city.
Pietermaritzburg
Approximately 1 640 students are accommodated in residences. About a third of the students registered stay in one of the four halls of residence. The Student Housing helpdesk can be contacted for assistance with off-campus accommodation.
Petrie Hall Of Residence
Petrie Hall is a cluster of residences for mainly first and second-year female students. The three large residences are Eleanor Russell Hall, University Hall and Lodge and are situated close to the Science Block, Administration, Student Services, the library and tennis courts, shops, Post Office and banks. A student committee ensures the smooth running of student life in all residences.
William O’Brien Hall Of Residence
Situated on the main campus, William O’Brien residence (men) consists of single rooms distributed over six blocks, with communal kitchens. Extra-mural activities are well catered for via the residence sports programme, senior and junior lounges, a large communal games room, and a visitor’s reception lounge. Additional facilities include a braai area, car repair and wash bays and secure parking for all resident’s cars.
Malherbe Hall Of Residence
Malherbe Residence (men and women) is situated on Durban Road opposite the University gate. Male and female accommodation is separate and the common rooms and TV lounge are shared. The residence possesses a quadrangle planted with trees, shrubs and lawn where students play ball games or relax. There is also a braai area. It is within walking distance of the Students’ Union, the Science Block, the Old Arts Block, shops, banks and the Post Office. It is however 10 minutes’ walk from the New Arts Block, Commerce, Law, Agriculture or Life Sciences Blocks. The Malherbe Flats (postgraduate students) are called Brucian House, and Robleigh House. Consisting of three, four and five-bedroomed flats, they are suited to small groups of students wishing to share accommodation. No sharing of individual rooms is permitted. Rooms are basically furnished and selfcatering. A number of lock-up garages are available to rent.
Denison Hall Of Residence
Denison (men and women) is situated in quiet park-like surroundings on the old golf course portion of campus. Denison has its own kitchen complex and a clubhouse, consisting of a large communal lounge and the Denison pub. The residence has gym, TV, snooker and table tennis facilities.
Westville
Westville campus offers a range of accommodation including off-campus and self-catering flats and on-campus residences where meals are provided on request.
On-Campus Residences
The on-campus residences accommodate 1810 students. Competition for places is keen and it is not possible to accept all applicants. There are four blocks of residences, namely S-Block, R-Block, P-Block and O-Block. O-Block only accommodates females while all others are mixed gender. All residences have access control, television rooms and parking space. All residences are self-catering while a dining facility is still available at O-Block.
Off-Campus Residences
The off-campus residences accommodate quite a number of students. Competition is also keen and it is not possible to accept all applications. These residences are fully furnished. All students share in double rooms while postgraduate students can be accommodated in a single room if available. Occupants share a kitchen and a bathroom. The Residence of Bedford Hall and San Sabil are situated in Hospital Road in town. Dunstaple Heights is in Varsity Drive whilst Santa Cruz, for postgraduate students only, is in Reservoir Hills.
Admission to Residences
Applications
Local first-year applicants must apply for admission to University residence on the application form supplied by the Central Applications Office (CAO). No separate application is required. It is not always possible to accommodate a student in the residence of first choice.
International students must apply for accommodation on the University of KwaZulu-Natal application form.
The closing date for submission of applications by undergraduate applicants is 30 June for Medicine and 30 September for all other undergraduate programmes.
Selection
Admission to residence is based on need, academic potential, ability to pay and distance from home.
The University cannot guarantee that applicants will be offered a place in residence if they are offered a place to study at the University, and it may be necessary for them to find accommodation off campus.
All students will be required to sign a Residence Code of Conduct.
Residence Fees
In 2021, residence fees consisted of an accommodation charge of approximately R35 690 per annum. The accommodation deposit for local students is R2750(2021). These fees do not include the cost of meals. (Meals approx R35 690 p.a.) International students are required to pay 25% of residence fees before registering. Student housing does not provide a bed linen.
Meals
All residences in Pietermaritzburg, Howard College, Edgewood and Westville a have self-catering capacity. Students are responsible for preparing their own meals. Students are responsible for their own crockery, cutlery, pots and other cooking utensils. In addition food outlets are available on campus. Meals are provided in on-campus residences on Westville campus. Edgewood has self-catering.
Linen, Laundry And Cleaning
Students are responsible for their own linen and laundry. All residences have internal laundry facilities. Students are also responsible for the cleaning of their own rooms.
Vacations
Students may stay in residence during the vacations on request and information on costs can be obtained from the Student Housing Offices.
