You’ll also work with and give support to individual pupils, groups of learners, or the entire class, as and when they need your help and support. The teacher you work with will direct you in this, as will the Special Educational Needs and Disability Coordinator, or SENDCO, at the school.

Can you be an North West assistant teacher without matric?
You can study teaching without Matric but it would be a different qualification. All Universities in South Africa that offer teaching require matric or at least a NQF level 4 certificate. You can however do an Education course at a TVET College which requires you to have Grade 9.

The North West Department of Education is committed to providing opportunities for high-school learners to gain skills and knowledge necessary for successful participation in the labour market. The province’s ongoing Teacher Assistant programme is one way in which the department is doing this. The programme is open to high-school learners in Grade 12 or equivalent who have completed their final year of school. The goal of the programme is to provide a wide range of support services to teachers in North West public schools. There are three types of participants in the Teacher Assistant programme:
* Full-time TAs (level 1) – assigned to one primary school, one secondary school, or one special school (school for children with disabilities). Full-time TAs work a 24-hour teaching schedule, usually divided between two schools or schools with a concentration of learners with special needs. They are required to complete a minimum of 2,000 hours of teaching over a five-year period (four months every year). At the end of their five-year commitment, they are eligible to apply for a further 12 months, which can be within the same school or a different one.
